(2024·雅禮月考一)Last Halloween my 5-year-old son entered a pumpkin-decorating (南瓜裝飾)contest at his school. He was so proud of his entry—a wild combination(結合) of carvings, paint and feathers he had constructed all by himself, with his own kindergartner's sense of art. He lugged(拉) it __1__ to the school cafeteria and we placed it among the other entries, a very creative bunch of witch pumpkins, snowman pumpkins, scary pumpkins, even a bubble-gum blowing pumpkin __2__ a baseball cap. “Wow,” I thought to myself, “the judges are going to have a(n) __3__ time choosing a winner.”

I guess the judges must have thought __4__ because they didn't choose one. When we returned to __5__ for the annual fall dinner that evening, we saw that all the pumpkins had been __6__ the same black and gold ribbon(絲綢綬帶,代表榮譽之物). My son, __7__ searching to see if he'd won, __8__ asking me, “Which pumpkin won? Where's the winner?”

What could I Say? “Well, it looks like everyone won. Look: you got a ribbon, honey!”

Kids are smart. That didn't __9__ him. “Yeah, but who won?” he asked. I could sense his disappointment and my own disappointment as well. What's the point of having a __10__ if you're not going to pick a winner?

I understand what the school was trying to do. The judges __11__ to send the message that all the children had done a great job and deserved to be recognized. I worry that a different message was sent, one that said losing is a hardship that no one should have to __12__.

Many of us hold on to little resentment(怨恨)that may come from an argument, a misunderstanding or some other painful events. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us —

  __1__

this is the only way we can forgive or

  __2__

a friendship or family relationship. An acquaintance of mine, whose health isn't very good, recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son in almost three years. “Why not?” I asked. She said that she and her son had had a(n)

  __3__

about his wife and that she wouldn't

  __4__

to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she

  __5__

at the beginning and said, “I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize. ” She was truly

  __6__

to die before reaching out to her only son first. After a little gentle

__7__, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and

  __8__

  an apology of his own.

As is usually the case, when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins. Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our

  __9__

are more important than our happiness. However, if you want to be a more peaceful person, you must understand that being right is almost never more important than

  __10__

yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go and reach out. Let other

  people be

__11__. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right. You'll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right”, they will become

  __12__

defensive and more loving toward you.
